I’d suggest Villa Balbiano if you want the wedding to feel grand, immersive, and very much like a full production in the best way. There’s enough variety on the property that each part of the day can have its own setting, which is perfect if you want the weekend to feel visually layered instead of like everything happened in one pretty corner.
Villa del Balbianello
Villa del Balbianello is one of those places that almost doesn’t feel real. Sitting on its own peninsula and surrounded by panoramic views of Lake Como, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most photographed locations in Italy.
One of my favorite things about this venue is that getting there is part of the experience. Many couples and guests arrive by boat, making the wedding feel like an adventure from the very beginning. If you’re planning a smaller celebration and want a venue that feels romantic, iconic, and uniquely Lake Como, Villa del Balbianello is hard to beat.
I’d suggest Villa del Balbianello if you want the arrival to feel like part of the story. The boat entrance is not just transportation here. It creates a whole shift in energy before the ceremony even begins, which is very Lake Como and very fun.
Villa Erba
If you’re planning a larger destination wedding, Villa Erba is definitely worth considering. The property offers plenty of space for a full wedding weekend, making it a great option for inviting a larger group of family and friends.

Summer (June–August) offers long evenings and vibrant energy around the lake, but it’s also the busiest season. Expect higher prices, increased tourism, and busier ferry schedules.
Fall (September–October) is often considered one of the best times to get married at Lake Como. The weather remains pleasant, the summer crowds begin to thin, and the golden evening light creates a beautiful atmosphere for portraits.
If you want the weekend to feel calmer and a little more tucked away, shoulder season may be a better fit than peak summer. If you want the lake to feel lively, full, and very “Italian summer,” then summer might be worth the crowds and higher prices. Neither is wrong. But the location cannot create comfort, connection, timing, or trust for you. That’s where the planning comes in. The photos that feel the most like you usually happen when there is enough space for the day to unfold instead of rushing from one “iconic” backdrop to the next.
Maybe that looks like a quiet boat ride after the ceremony, walking through town together while your guests head to cocktail hour, sneaking away for a few minutes by the water, or letting dinner stretch a little longer because everyone is actually enjoying themselves.
Creating space for those moments starts with your timeline. Rather than scheduling portraits into a rushed twenty-minute window, consider building in time to travel by boat, explore your venue, or wander through nearby streets without feeling like you’re racing from one event to the next. You can absolutely hire a local photographer in Italy, and for some couples, that makes total sense. This is not me fighting the entire country of Italy. We love Italy.
