What Stands Out About Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery
The first thing I noticed about Casa Real is how easy it is to move through the property without feeling like you’re circling back to the same spot over and over. That matters more than people realize!
Some venues have one main portrait location, maybe two if we’re feeling lucky. And then it takes a little more work to keep the gallery feeling varied. Casa Real has so many options built in! The archways feel elegant, the vineyards give you that classic Northern California winery feeling, and the walkways around the property are perfect for movement-based portraits.
It gives us room to create without making you feel like you’re being dragged around for photos all day.

Casa Real is a great fit if you want your wedding to feel elevated, planned, and, of course, beautiful, but still actually fun to be at!
It works especially well for couples who care about the guest experience, natural light, vineyard portraits, and having a gallery with variety. Best Photo Locations at Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery
One of the best parts of Casa Real is that you do not have to rely on one single photo location for the whole day! Each area of the property has its own feeling. Which is perfect if you want your gallery to have variety without needing to leave the venue.
The Archways
The archways are probably one of my favorite spots on the property! They feel grand without taking over the photo. Which is actually really important because the couple should still be the focal point.
Kelsey and John chose to do their first look here, and it was such a sweet moment. The space gave them a little pocket of quiet before the rest of the day picked up again.
The Vineyards
The vineyards are such a good spot for golden hour portraits. They give you that very Northern California winery feeling without needing much else.
One thing to know: the sun can dip behind the mountains about 15 minutes before actual sunset. So, I like to plan vineyard portraits a little earlier than your weather app says.
The Shaded Architecture
For midday portraits, Casa Real has a lot of built-in shade, which is a huge win. Harsh midday light isn’t always the most ideal for portraits, so I’m always looking for shaded architecture, softer pockets of light, and ways to make the venue work with us instead of against us.
I also love bringing in backlighting whenever it makes sense. For this wedding, we used the light behind the couple to give the bride’s veil that soft glow. It added so much dimension without needing to overcomplicate anything. These are the kinds of things I’m always paying attention to! It’s not just about where we’re taking portraits, but how the light is actually working in that space.
The Walkways
The walkways are great for movement. Walking portraits, dress movement, and the little in-between moments. I love to ease my couples into portrait time with movement, so you don’t have to think about what to do with your hands or if your posing feels stiff.
Spots like this help couples feel less posed while still giving the photos direction.
My Biggest Casa Real Portrait Tip: Break Things Up!
One thing I would absolutely recommend for Casa Real weddings is breaking portraits into smaller pockets throughout the day instead of doing one huge portrait block all at once.
For Kelsey and John, we did portraits in 15–20 minute bursts. A few after their first look, a few between bridal party and family photos, a few after family photos before they tucked away, and then sunset portraits after dinner service.
This worked SO well because they never had to be “on” for the camera for a full hour straight. Nobody wants to feel like they’re trapped in portrait jail on their wedding day.
It also gave their gallery a lot more range. Different locations, different light, different energy. Same couple, but the photos had more dimension because we let the day shift naturally.
That is one of the reasons Casa Real works so well. The venue gives you enough variety that mini portrait sessions make so much sense.
The Personal Details That Made This Wedding Feel Like Them
Beyond the venue itself, Kelsey and John had so many personal details woven into the day. That is always what makes a gallery feel more like a story and your day!
There was a raffle for pottery made by the bride, cocktail florals created by a bridesmaid, emotional vows, and a heartfelt speech to family. Those are the kinds of details that feel personal because they actually are personal.
And as much as I love a good vineyard portrait, these are the moments that give the day its depth. The venue creates the setting, but the people and the choices they make are what bring it to life!
Casa Real Wedding Timeline Tips From a Photographer
My biggest tips as a Bay Area wedding photographer: If you want golden hour vineyard portraits, plan them a little earlier than the actual sunset! Because of the mountains, the sun can disappear sooner than expected.
I’d also recommend building in a few portrait pockets throughout the day instead of saving everything for one big photo session, just like we did for Kelsey and John. Casa Real has enough variety that you can use different parts of the venue at different times. which makes the gallery feel more dynamic and keeps the day from feeling too photo-heavy.
Around midday, I’d usually look for the shaded areas near the architecture so your portraits still feel soft and intentional, even when the sun is doing the most. Later in the day, the vineyards are perfect for sunset portraits, the walkways are great for movement, and the archways make such a sweet option for a quieter first look or a few tucked-away portraits together.

Okay, now you know why I personally love this Bay Area wedding venue, so let’s jump into all the logistics to see if it would work for your big day!
Location
Casa Real is tucked into Livermore Valley Wine Country, about 30 minutes north of San Jose. Making it an easy commute for any guests flying into the San Jose International Airport. Plus, there are plenty of hotels in Pleasanton and Livermore for guests to stay.
Now for the venue spaces. I’m not going to pretend couples choose venues based only on logistics, because… no. But the way a space functions really does affect how the day feels, how guests move, and how the photos unfold. So here’s what to know about the main spaces at Casa Real.
Grand Salon
If you’re planning a larger wedding, the Grand Salon is probably going to be one of the spaces you care about most because this is where so much of the evening actually happens. Dinner, speeches, dancing, people wandering between tables, your family catching up, your friends getting progressively more unhinged on the dance floor, all the good reception energy lives here.
What I like about this space is that it gives your guests room to actually enjoy the celebration. That matters for photos, but it also matters for the way the night feels. When people can move through the room easily, the reception feels more relaxed and natural. Your guests are not stuck in one crowded corner trying to politely squeeze past chairs, and I’m able to photograph the little moments happening all around the room, reactions during speeches, hugs between tables, people laughing over dinner, and all the movement that makes a reception feel alive.
So if you want a reception that feels full, warm, and easy for your guests to settle into, the Grand Salon makes a lot of sense.
Amber Room
The Amber Room is a great indoor option if you want something that feels a little more tucked in. I know I talk a lot about outdoor ceremonies because, yes, I am very into good light and open-air spaces, but indoor spaces can be beautiful when they have that warmth and atmosphere!
The fireplace and softer lighting make the Amber Room feel extremely cozy without feeling too casual, which makes it a solid option for ceremonies, cocktail hours, or receptions.
Entrance Hall
The Entrance Hall is less of a traditional “photo spot,” but I will 100% be taking candids here. This part of the day is honestly one of my favorites because everyone is arriving, seeing each other for the first time, hugging, catching up, and getting excited for what’s about to happen. It has that very real “okay, the wedding is starting” energy, and I love that.
And it definitely doesn’t hurt that the space is gorgeous, too. The tall ceilings, natural light, and Mediterranean-inspired details give everything a more elevated feeling. It may not be where we plan your main portraits, but it is such a good space for guest candids, family reactions, people adjusting outfits, and all the little in-between moments that make the day feel like it’s unfolding.
Sun Garden
The Sun Garden is probably the space couples are most drawn to first, and I get it, it’s stunning. If you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony with greenery, vineyard views, and that very Bay Area winery wedding feeling, this is probably the spot that you’ll be obsessed with.
What I like about the Sun Garden is that it already gives the ceremony a sense of place. You don’t have to overdo the design for it to feel thoughtful, because the open air, the greenery, and the vineyard backdrop are already doing a lot of the work. Add florals, personal details, and your people in the space, and it starts to feel really special.
For photos, the Sun Garden gives you a ceremony backdrop that feels so full. There’s greenery, texture, and depth behind you, so your ceremony photos have that soft winery setting. All while still keeping the focus on the two of you and the people reacting around you. It also gives us a lot to work with for wide ceremony photos, guest candids, processional moments, and those just-married reactions right after you walk back down the aisle. Very important. Very cute. Very much my favorites.

What is the best time of year to get married at Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery?

Casa Real’s food and beverage service is managed in-house, which is a huge plus! Yes, Casa Real has on-site parking, which is one of those very unsexy logistics that actually matters a lot! Easy parking means your guests arrive with less stress. And less stress is always good for the overall energy of the day.

Yes! The venue offers accessible facilities designed to accommodate guests with mobility needs. If you have specific accessibility questions, I’d always recommend discussing them with the venue during your tour so they can help accommodate everyone attending your celebration.
How many hours are included with a wedding booking?
Wedding packages can vary depending on your event and the options you choose. However, all packages include a 5-hour reception with 4.5 consecutive hours of full open bar services. If you’re hosting your ceremony onsite, the ceremony fee includes an additional 30 minutes of event time. This brings your total event time to 5.5 hours. If you add the On-Site Extended Ceremony option, you’ll receive a total of 7.5 hours of event time. The venue’s event team can walk you through exactly what’s included in your rental, including access times for setup, your celebration, and breakdown!
Can we bring in our own caterer?
Yes! Casa Real has in-house catering, but they also allow outside catering for cuisines their culinary team does not specialize in. This includes Indian, Afghan, Nigerian, and others. Since policies can change, definitely confirm the details directly with the venue!
This can be especially helpful for cultural weddings where food is a big part of the experience and family traditions. And honestly, food matters. Deeply!
Does Casa Real offer menu tastings?
Absolutely! Couples generally have the opportunity to attend a tasting as part of the planning process. It’s a great chance to sample menu options, finalize selections, and experience the hospitality you’ll be sharing with your guests on your wedding day. I love how they do it too! They host a seasonal group menu tasting once per quarter for two guests. Each couple has their own private table, and you’ll have the opportunity to sample menu selections in a relaxed setting. It is such a fun way to get some wedding planning done while feeling like you’re on a fun date!

Casa Real can be a really strong option for cultural weddings. Especially if you are planning a larger guest count, multiple traditions, or a wedding day with a lot of family involvement.
One thing I always think about with cultural weddings is how quickly the day can fill up. There are rituals, family photos, outfit changes, speeches, food, timelines, and usually several people lovingly asking where you need to be next. It is meaningful, but it can be a lot.
