If you’ve ever wanted your wedding to feel like a garden party on the Italian Riviera but with California coastline views, The Hollins House might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Perched above the Pasatiempo Golf Course with sweeping views of Monterey Bay, this venue has a quality that’s hard to manufacture: it’s just effortlessly beautiful. The building itself dates back to 1931, all Golden Era details, floor-to-ceiling windows, and vintage French doors, it has the kind of bones that don’t need much to look incredible in photographs.

I’ve had the chance to shoot here, and what I love most is how well the space flows. There’s a natural progression from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception that gives the day real rhythm without feeling forced. Guests move, the light shifts, and you get genuinely different settings within one venue — which means your gallery doesn’t all look like it happened in the same 10 square feet.

From a photographer’s perspective, the light here is exceptional. The views aren’t just pretty — they give you that open sky quality that makes everything feel cinematic. The gazebo framed by coastal live oaks with the Pacific as a backdrop is stunning for ceremony coverage, and as the day moves into golden hour and the reception moves inside, the crystal chandeliers and hardwood floors create a completely different but equally gorgeous atmosphere.

The vibes that work here:

Hollins House is one of those venues that can hold a few different aesthetics depending on how you style it. What I’ve seen translate beautifully:

  • European garden party — the architecture and lush lawns lean naturally into that warm, relaxed elegance
  • Whimsical — florals go a long way here, and the light makes everything feel a little dreamy
  • Enchanted evening — once the sun goes down and the chandeliers are doing their thing, it genuinely transforms

Best for: Intimate weddings. The venue accommodates up to around 180 for a ceremony, but it really sings for smaller guest counts where the space feels personal rather than filled.

If you’re planning a wedding in the Santa Cruz area and want something with genuine character — not just a backdrop, but a place that actually contributes to the feeling of the day — Hollins House is worth a serious look.
