Over the years, I’ve photographed countless weddings and I’ve noticed a clear pattern: the couples who feel most relaxed on their wedding day are the ones who had a photography timeline mapped out well in advance. Not because it makes the day rigid — but because it gives every moment room to breathe.
This post is a high-level look at how I break down a wedding day from a photography perspective, and how a little planning goes a long way toward getting the images you’ll treasure forever.
For the full deep dive — including detailed tips, time suggestions, and everything I wish every couple knew before their wedding day — you can download my complete Wedding Details Guide here.

The Phases of Your Wedding Day (From a Photographer’s Perspective)
Most couples think of their wedding timeline in terms of the ceremony and the party. But from a photography standpoint, the day has a lot more chapters — and each one calls for a different approach.

Getting Ready
(45–60 Minutes)
This is where the story begins. The energy in the room, the light, the small details you’ve chosen — all of it sets the tone for your entire gallery. A little intention in how you set up your getting ready space goes a surprisingly long way. My guide covers exactly how to prepare your room, your details, and your vibe so this part of the day photographs beautifully.

Romantic Portraits
(30–60 Minutes, Split Throughout the Day)
Something most couples don’t consider is how long an extended portrait session can feel on your wedding day. I actually recommend splitting your portrait time into multiple shorter sessions rather than one long block. Different parts of the day bring different light, different energy, and different emotions. The variety makes your gallery so much richer. In my guide, I break down how to plan your portrait timeline around your venue, your priorities, and how to work with me to time natural light.

Bridal Party Portraits
(10–20 Minutes)
Every group has its own energy, and the best bridal party photos come from leaning into that rather than forcing a formula. Whether your crew is chaotic and fun or polished and editorial, we’ll make it work. The key is giving me a heads up on the vibe you’re going for so we can move through this efficiently.

Family Portraits
(15–30 Minutes)
This is the most logistically driven part of the day, but with a little preparation it can move quickly and painlessly. Having your group list ready in advance and designating a point person on each side of the family makes a bigger difference than most people expect. My guide walks through exactly how to set this up so no one gets left out and no time gets wasted.

The Ceremony
The heart of your day. My job here is mostly to stay out of the way and let the moment unfold. If you’re having a cultural ceremony, I gather all the context I need ahead of time so I can photograph your traditions and rituals with the care they deserve.

Cocktail Hour + Reception
Some of the most beautiful reception photos happen before guests even walk in. Cocktail hour is the perfect window to capture the room while everything is still pristine — all the details you spent months choosing, documented exactly as you envisioned. From there, it’s all about capturing the celebration as it unfolds.

It All Starts Before Your Wedding Day
The photography timeline doesn’t begin on the wedding day itself — it starts weeks earlier. From questionnaires that help me understand your priorities and must-have shots, to a details call where we map out the day together, by the time your wedding arrives we’ve already built a plan tailored to your venue, your timeline, and what matters most to you.
You don’t need to figure it out alone. That’s what I’m here for.
